Note: This watercolour looks down from the south-west to the famous beauty spot soon afterwards celebrated by Thomas Moore. The 3-arch stone bridge at the left, built in the mid-eighteenth century, carries the main road over the Avonbeg River close to its confluence with the Avonmore in the Vale of Avoca. A hay wagon is approaching the bridge, and the farm with outbuildings in the middle distance on the left has hay stacks. The caption to an aquatint of this view notes ‘on rising ground the seat of Captain Mills’, seen beyond woods on the right. This evidently refers to Abraham Mills of Cronebane, who as captain of a Yeomanry Corps was active in the suppression of the 1798 rebellion. There is a tower to the right of the house, and this, together with a cluster of buildings at the top of the zig-zag road in the distance, may be connected with the local copper workings.
