Thomas Pelham-Holles Document Signed
Thomas Pelham-Holles Document Signed - a fine four page letter dated December 4, 1740 to the Governor and Company of Connecticut concerning the movement of British troops to the American colonies. Signed "Holles Newcastle". 7.5" x 12". Thomas Pelham was the eldest son of the 1st Baron Pelham and a nephew of the 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. His uncle died in 1711, and his father the next year, both leaving their large estates to him. When he came of age in 1714, Lord Pelham was one of the greatest landowners in the kingdom. Pelham sustained the Whigs at Queen Anne's death, and had much influence in convincing Londoners to accept King George I. He was created Earl of Clare, 1715 Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1715, and a Knight of the Garter in 1718.

In 1717 he first held political office as lord chamberlain of the household, and in 1724 was chosen by Sir Robert Walpole to be secretary of state for the Southern Department. As the senior secretary of state, Newcastle was responsible for Southern England, Wales, Ireland, and the American colonies. This office he held continuously for thirty years (1724-1754), until he succeeded his brother as prime minister (1754-1756). However, as prime minister he was blamed for Great Britain's poor efforts in the French and Indian War and in November 1756 he was replaced by the Duke of Devonshire. In July 1757 Newcastle again became prime minister, serving until May 1762 when the new King George III maneuvered his former tutor, Lord Bute, into the premiership.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
