American political cartoonist and illustrator (1840–1902) best known for devising the donkey and elephant symbols of the Democratic and Republican parties and the familiar “American” version of Santa Claus. Uncommon 4 x 6.5 Sarony cabinet portrait of the impressively-whiskered artist in three-quarter profile, boldly signed in ink in the lower border, “Th: Nast, April 20, 1885.” Moderate image wrinkling primarily to edges, light silvering, a crack to lower left corner, soiling to borders, and some scattered stains, otherwise very good condition. While his creations are recognizable, images of the less recognizable illustrator are surprisingly elusive. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection.
