Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Delaware (1734–1817) who later served as president of the Continental Congress, Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, and Governor of Pennsylvania. Unique Revolutionary War–dated free franked address panel, measuring 10.5 x 5.5 unfolded (with address panel of 7.5 x 3.5), addressed in an unknown hand to "His Excellency Caesar Rodney Esquire, President of the Delaware State," and franked in the lower left, "Tho. McKean." The address panel is marked "(public service)," and the upper panel is annotated, "to be forwarded without the least delay by order, Sept. 20, 1781." In very good condition, with staining, toning, and a repaired area of paper loss along the top edge. Like McKean, Rodney was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and served as president of Delaware during most of the Revolutionary War. An excellent association piece between two of America's founding fathers.
