In 1804, he married Anna Payne (1779-1832), Dolley Madison's sister, and they had seven children including Dolley Payne Madison Cutts (1811-1838) who was five years old when 82-year-old Thomas McKean asked her father to kiss her for him. A member of the Continental Congress (1774-1776, 1778-1782) from Delaware, McKean signed the Declaration of Independence and served as President of Congress in 1781. This darkly penned and boldly signed letter has been affixed to a sheet of brown paper resulting in light wrinkles at the corners.
