ALS signed “Th. M. Randolph,” one page, 4 x 6, no date. Letter to Peter Carr, a Virginia educator and politician rumored to have fathered children by Thomas Jefferson's slave, Sally Hemings. In part: "…having concurred with me in opinion that it would be right and agreeable to Th. Jefferson & have without permission furnished Mr. Ogilvie books from his library of which I keep a list. He desires me to put him in the way of using the same privilege in our absence. Will you go with him…& let him supply himself, keeping a list for me? I consider the whole responsibility on myself & I have no anxiety, being acquainted with Mr. O's love for books." In good to very fine condition, with creasing, tears, and excised areas of paper loss. Thomas Jefferson had assembled one of the largest and most diverse private libraries in America, and it was purchased by the Library of Congress in 1815 as part of efforts to rebuild its collections after they were destroyed in the War of 1812.
