THOMAS LIPTON,(1850-1931). Merchant. The Scottish-born Lipton started his career as a grocer’s clerk, but soon opened a chain of food stores. He entered the tea business and made a fortune, especially through the new medium of advertising. He turned his attention to yatching and unsuccessfully tried to win the America’s Cup five times. He left his fortune for hospital construction. Signed card with sentiment. 4 1/2" x 3". "Yrs faithfully, Thomas J. Lipton". Some light foxing at left, otherwise fine.
