American judge and politician (1732–1819) who served as the first Governor of Maryland, a delegate to the Continental Congress, and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. His tenure on the Supreme Court was the shortest in US history. Rare Revolutionary War-dated Manuscript DS, signed “T. Johnson,” one page, 7 x 3.5, July 20, 1781. Pay order issued to Jeremiah Townly Chase for "four hundred and twenty six Pounds nine shillings and Eight pence three farthings" pursuant to the “Act to Adjust the Debts due from this State.” Signed at the conclusion by Johnson, and signed on the reverse by Chase. Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet. In fine condition. Chase was a delegate to the Continental Congress, co-author of the Northwest Ordinance, and Chief Justice of the Maryland Court of Appeals. The Manuscript Society notes that Johnson’s signature is among the rarest of all US Supreme Court Justices.
