Partly-printed DS, signed “Th: Jefferson,” one page, 8.25 x 13, September 1, 1780. As Virginia governor, Jefferson approves a land grant for property along the James River. In part: “Know Ye that in consideration…of Ten Shillings Sterling paid by William Hainfer into the treasury of this commonwealth there is granted by the said commonwealth…a certain tract or parcel of land containing Sixty Acres.” Double matted with a portrait and a plaque and framed to an overall size of 24.25 x 23.5. In very good condition, with paper tears and areas of paper loss along edges professionally reinforced from the back, scattered wrinkling, and mild toning and soiling, heaviest along horizontal folds. Jefferson’s signature is large and prominent.

During and immediately following the Revolutionary War, Virginia—under Governor Jefferson—made a practice of granting tracts of land in previously undeveloped areas, especially in the western portion of the colony, in part to encourage the establishment of a natural buffer against neighboring militant Indian tribes. This document, signed by the future third US president, represents one such arrangement, even as the American Revolution continued to be fought.
