Partly-printed DS, signed “Th: Jefferson” as president and “James Madison” as secretary of state, one page, 14.75 x 8.25, February 26, 1806. Land grant issued to John McCoy of Washington County, Pennsylvania for a parcel of land under an “Act of Congress entitled ‘An Act providing for the sale of the Lands of the United States in the territory north-west of the Ohio and above the mouth of the Kentucky River.’” Matted and framed to an overall size of 21.75 x 17. In good condition, with intersecting folds, with partial separation and paper loss to central vertical fold, scattered creases and wrinkles, staining to center of document, not affecting legibility, and light foxing. Both signatures are mostly unaffected by any of the document’s flaws. The white wafer seal is toned and creased, but intact.During his presidency, Jefferson doubled the size of the United States with the 1803 purchase of the Louisiana Territory. As the nation continued to expand, Congress implemented measures that allowed its residents to benefit from the expansion—men such as Mr. McCoy. Ohio lands were surveyed and sold by the federal government, private individuals, and by the states of Virginia and Connecticut. Since parts of the state were surveyed at different times, Ohio was divided into areas called survey districts or land grants. Between 1798 and 1821, Congress allowed anyone the chance to buy large amounts of the remaining public land. A desirable document signed by two chief executives as America continued its expansion.
