<B>Signed by the Author of the Declaration of Independence and the "Father of the Constitution"</B></I><BR><BR><B>Thomas Jefferson and James Madison</B></I> Ship's Papers Signed "<I>Th: Jefferson</B></I>" as president and "<I>James Madison</B></I>", as secretary of state, one page, 10.5" x 15". On vellum. Issued out of Washington, but dated New York, September 10, 1808. Countersigned: "<I>David Gelston Collector</B></I>" of the District of New York. Ships papers for "the Brig Hetty of New York Obed Bunker, master or commander of the burthen of Two hundred Eight & 93/95 tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with Two men To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance seizure or molestation the said Brig appearing by good testimony to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States and to him or them only." Scalloped edge at top. Full paper seal affixed with red wax at bottom left. The ink of Jefferson's signature didn't adhere too well, but is still clear and dark. Madison's signature is light. A vertical fold passes through the "d" of "Madison" and between the "a" and "v" of "David". Overall, an attractive document with two nautical vignettes at top.<BR><BR>James Madison served as Secretary of State during both Jefferson administrations, from 1801-1809, succeeding Jefferson and serving two terms as President, from 1809-1817. David Gelston was a prominent figure in New York politics and served as Collector of the Port of New York from 1801-1820. Documents signed by two U.S. Presidents are extremely desirable and this is a fine example.
