<B>Thomas Jefferson and James Madison Four Language Ship's Sea Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>Th: Jefferson</B></I>" as President and "<I>James Madison</B></I>" as Secretary of State. One page, 20.5" x 16"; partly printed in four languages: French, Spanish, English, and Dutch; Bristol, Connecticut; October 26, 1803. It reads in part, "<I>BE IT KNOWN, That leave and permission are hereby given to John Haile Junr. master or commander of the sloop called The Sally of the burthen of twenty two tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of Bristol bound for Bourbon, and laden with fish, onions, pork, beef, beets, potatoes, oil, flour, poultry to depart and proceed with his said sloop on his said voyage, such sloop having been visited and the said John Haile having made oath before the proper officer, that the said sloop belongs to one or more of the citizens of the United States of America, and to him or only them…</B></I>" There is a 3" paper seal of the United States affixed on the left, and a smaller 2" seal affixed below it. The document is elaborately matted and framed along side two handsome engravings of Jefferson and Madison. The entire piece measures 36" x 26".<BR><BR>The document is in fine condition; usual folds are present; several areas of foxing; transference visible from the seals, which are still intact; docketing information on verso.
