Thomas Jefferson Oil on Canvas Portrait Framed Shown With Quill Pen, Drafting The Declaration Of Independence
Thomas Jefferson Oil on Canvas Portrait, Ornately Framed, by artist and signed "Franklin Barber Clark", Shown with his Quill Pen in Hand, likely representing his Drafting of The United States Declaration Of Independence in 1776, Very Fine.
c. 1920, This original Oil on Canvas of Thomas Jefferson measures about 27” x 34” and is decorative gold gilt framed to 34” x 41” overall with some modest wear. Here, the American Founding Father is shown holding a Quill Pen, symbolic of his authorship of the Declaration of Independence penned in 1776. Signed in the lower right corner "Franklin Barber Clark". About eight early patch repairs or reinforcements are on the blank verso, and the painting would benefit from a professional cleaning to bring out its full vibrance and eye appeal. Clark was known for his miniature and large-scale portraits through the 1920s. He studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under the tutelage of William-Adolphe Bouguereau before settling in the United States, ultimately in Washington. His historic and portrait works were critically acclaimed and acquired by various government institutions, including two examples located at The Maryland Statehouse and United States House of Representatives. Overall, a nice original large size oil painting by this well respected artist.
