<B>Thomas Jefferson & James Madison Four Language Ship's Sea Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>Th:Jefferson</B></I>" as President and "<I>James Madison</B></I>" as Secretary of State. One page, 19.75" x 15.75", partly printed in four languages- French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, New York, August 23, 1803. In part: "BE IT KNOWN, That leave and permission are hereby given to Alexander Jenkins of Hudson, master or commander of the Sloop called the <I>Franklin</B></I> of the burden of 84 33/95 tons, or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New York bound for Tenerife and laden with Nankeens, dry Goods, Bread, flour, Soap, Candles, tobacco, gunpowder, Pipes, Tar, Shoes, Rum, Gin, Butter, Boards & Stores to depart and proceed with the said Sloop on his said voyage, such Sloop having been visited, and the said A. Jenkins having made oath before the proper officer, that the said Sloop belongs to one or more of the citizens of the United States of America, and to him or them only..." There is a 2.25" white paper seal of the United States affixed at left with a 1.25" seal of New York beneath it. Also countersigned by David Gelston, as Collector of the Customs, who was a prominent New York politician. Very good condition; several folds, roughness at edges, mounting traces on verso at top, seals are intact and complete. The Jefferson and Madison signatures are bold and dark. Excellent for display.
