Thomas Jefferson Autograph Letter Signed as Pres
Thomas Jefferson Autograph Letter Signed as President. Th: Jefferson, one page, 8" x 7.75", Monticello, August 23, 1804. Addressed to Mr. Nicholas. Professionally laid down on archival paper due to weakness at one horizontal fold. It appears that Jefferson's pen may have been a little dry, as the last portion of his signature is a bit light as written, and then becomes stronger again on the next word, presumably after he had dipped his pen. Secretarially franked "The President" on verso. The letter reads in its entirety: "I have directed a Commission to be sent to me for Samuel Travis as 1st mate of a revenue cutter. but altho' the 1st mate is dead, was it intended or is it right to make him 1st passing over the head of the 2nd mate? If this is wrong be so good as to inform me immediately that I may correct the commission before signature. I send for you consideration, applications on behalf of Armistead, Broadie, & Jones to be Collector for Hampton, and await your advice. Affectionate salutations."

An interesting letter which demonstrates the degree to which our early presidents involved themselves in the minutia of government's day-to-day operations. Jefferson demonstrates sensitivity both to protocol and to equitability in seeking to avoid a president intercession that might offend against either. A fine presidential Jefferson letter with attractive display presence. Very fine condition; light overall toning.
