Thomas Jefferson signed autograph letter ''Th. Jefferson” as President, to John Barnes, Washington, 5 July 1802. Jefferson writes a note to Barnes, regarding his personal expenses as President. Note was hand-carried by Etienne Lemaire, Maitre d’hotel of the Executive Mansion. Jefferson asks for money so Lemaire can cover expenses: “Pay to Mr. Lemaire or order two hundred and forty three dollars seventeen cents for value received on account of sir…Your humble servt.” Also signed in French by Lemaire confirming he had received the money. Single page, oblong measuring 7.25'' x 4.5'' in fine condition.
