Prominent Texan Thomas J Green Writes to President Polk 2 page Autographed letter signed, measuring 8" x 10", in bold black ink on light green letter paper. Written from Ridgeway, North Carolina (?) on March 19, 1847. Addressed to " His Excel. Jas. K. Polk/Pres. of U.S. Fine condition.

Green played an active role in the Texas fight for independence, serving , among other roles, as a recruiter for the Texas Army in New Orleans. Here he writes to Polk to request a Captaincy for one Daniel Drake Henrie, who had just completed the second of two daring escapes from the enemy (the first was accomplished in the company of Green, from the Castle of Pinote in 1843). Green points out that " Besides H. has other and strong claims upon your Excellencies (sic) considerations-he gave up his commission in the U.S. Navy to fight for Texan independence and has no prospect of being reinstated. Subsequently he, one of the first to raise a volunteer company and tender his services to the war department for the Mexican War." A very nice historical letter.
