Member of the pre-Vaudevillian acrobat troupe known as the Hanlon-Lees (1836–1868). He is thought to have gone insane as a result of head injuries from falling off a trapeze, and committed suicide in a violent fit of rage while in jail. ALS signed “Tho. Hanlon,” one page, 4.75 x 7.75, January 31, 1860. Letter to a gentleman. In full: “Your communication of 25th inst. I rec’d this morning or would have earlier complied with your request.” Affixed to a larger scrapbook page beside a newspaper clipping about Hanlon’s show. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), some scattered soiling and adhesive remnants, and a small portion of the news clipping affixed on top of the left edge of the letter.
