First ''Special Missouri Edition'' of Thomas Hart Benton's illustrated autobiography, ''An Artist in America,'' signed twice: once above an original sketch on the half-title page, and once on the limited edition page. Publisher Robert M. McBride & Company: New York: 1937: 276pp. Measures 6.5'' x 9.5''. Tongue in cheek sketch features a coat of arms encircling a winged drunkard who is holding a wine bottle. Sketch inscribed, ''To the [?] for Tom / Thomas H. Benton.'' Benton is considered the Father of Abstract Expressionism, a muralist, social critic and teacher of other important artists, including Jackson Pollock. In the chapter entitled ''Art and Cities'' Benton comments on his awkward introduction into New York's underworld society, ''…as long as I had my face over a highball I didn't mind and returned as much as was given to me.'' Like Henry Miller, his talk is straight, at times shocking and decidedly personal. Item includes insert describing Benton's involvement with the Associated American Artists and an invitation to receive their catalog and visit their galleries. Blue cloth hardcover, lacking dustjacket. Both front and back hinges are cracked, light foxing throughout, overall in good condition.
