Notarized DS, signed “Thomas A. Edison, Presdt,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 10.5 x 16.5, July 28, 1890. An indenture document transferring ownership of land in Bloomfield, New Jersey from the Edison Lamp Company to the Edison General Electric Company for the amount of one dollar. Signed on the reverse of the first page by Edison, and countersigned by Edison’s secretary A. O. Tate. In very good to fine condition, with toning from seal over end of Edison’s title, intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, tape reinforcement to horizontal fold on front of first page, and reverse of second page, and some mild mirroring of ink.

The great inventor brought three of his companies—Edison Lamp Company, Edison Machine Works, and Bergmann & Company—together under one umbrella when he incorporated the Edison General Electric Company in 1889. The “official” transfer of ownership for the Bloomfield, New Jersey property noted here—in exchange for a single dollar—occurred as Edison faced competition from another electrical innovation company, the Thomson-Houston Company. As the two businesses expanded, however, both found it difficult to be dominant in the field relying solely on their own technology, resulting in an 1892 merger that created the General Electric Company. A document that paved the way for a “brighter” future.
