Rare ALS signed “Thomas A. Edison,” two pages, 8.5 x 11, Edison Laboratory letterhead, November 6, 1899. Letter to Herman Ernest Dick in Chicago, and stamped near the top, “Phonograph Dictation.” In full: “Concerning our various talks regarding the affairs of the North American Transportation and Trading Co. of Chicago during the past year, but more especially referring to our talk today, I will say that providing you take up the matter of increasing the capitol stock of the Co. to six million and complete it in the manner as now contemplated I would be glad to take a substantial interest in the new Co.
“It seems to me that on account of the large amount of property in foreign territory, the plan proposed is a good one. If I should become a shareholder I would naturally be inclined to advise them regarding the problems arising from working their running property but if it should come to a point of my making a business arrangement with them, either directly or through you with them for the use of my machinery for crushing and dry separation etc I should want to be free to make such arrangements as I would with other companies of like importance.” Nicely signed at the conclusion with Edison’s “umbrella” signature, measuring an impressive four inches long. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a punch hole to first page, and mild overall soiling.
At the time of this letter, Alaska was being besieged by prospectors looking to strike it rich during the Yukon Gold Rush. Edison was apparently no exception, as here he sought to buy a gigantic share of stock—“six million”— in the North American Transportation and Trading Company. But his largess did not end there, as the inventor also desired to engage in other business ventures with the company, primarily assisting with their mining operations through the sale of one of his machines—initially used in ore separation—that could be utilized in gold processing. A most desirable letter on several fronts! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
