Thomas Clater was a painter of domestic genre and portraits. He exhibited at the
RA from 1819-1859; titles include "Dressing the Bride", "Luncheon" and "The
Music Lesson". His paintings were usually scenes from provincial life, in a
manner based on Dutch genre. "Reading the Letter" is a typical example of
domestic genre of this period and is likely to be the painting of the same title
exhibited at the RA. It depicts a young lady reading a letter to an old couple,
possibly her parents, with a third man behind. Clater also depicts with vivid
realism a goose, baskets, parcels, pitchers and spinning wheel - in effect, a
miniature still-life composition - in the right hand corner of the painting.
