English abolitionist and a leading campaigner against the slave trade in the British Empire (1760–1846). ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7.25, May 9, 1845. A touching letter penned just a few months before Clarkson's death, expressing his sorrow at learning of the death of the child of the Biddell family. In part: “My dear friend, let me assure you, that both of you have very seldom been out of our thoughts since the melancholy event took place…Who, that has a heart to feel, could abstain from mourning at the loss of such a child of promise.” In very good condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds, a piece of tape affixed to the center of the page, and scattered soiling.
