Thomas Aloysius Tad Dorgan - Original Comic S
Thomas Aloysius "Tad" Dorgan - Original Comic Strip Art for Judge Rummy (undated). An incredibly popular strip in its day, Judge Rummy told the story of a man who had a passion for two things in life: the law and cigars. Thomas Dorgan, aka Tad, lost three fingers from his right hand in an industrial accident, and began drawing cartoons as a form of therapy. Soon after, he landed his first job as a staff artist on the San Francisco Bulletin, where his comics caught the eye of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, who hired him on the New York Journal as a sports cartoonist. Soon branching into humor cartoons as well as sports features, Tad's popularity continued to grow. Judge Rummy, the strip for which he is best remembered, was popular enough to spawn several silent cartoons in 1918 and 1919, at least one of which was worked on by Grim Natwick, later to gain fame as one of Disney's foremost animators. The strip offered here, in outstanding condition, measures approximately 14.5" x 11.5" overall, and is signed by Tad in the last panel. There is some chipping and some brittleness at the edges, but this does not affect the art in any way. As is common in strips from this time period, there is some blue-pencil shading on the bailiff's jacket, and "That Man Knew" is written in the top margin. This is a lovely strip from an important period in comic strip history. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
