Seward to negotiate for the purchase of the Alaskan Territory. Seward and de Stoeckl eventually arranged the purchase for $7.2 million (roughly 2.5 cents per acre). 'Seward's Folly', as it was known at the time, eventually became the site of the Alaskan gold rush and eventually the 49th state.<BR><BR>Louis Eugene Leroux was an academically trained French painter who was employed by the Czar as a court painter. He was commissioned to record this historically significant event when he was 33 years of age.<BR>1 <BR><BR><B>Condition Report:</B> canvas has been beva lined, 3in. tear in wall panel behind Czar repaired and overpainted, minor puncture in diplomat on farthest right, several small spots of inpaint in Czar and other figures but not in faces, cracklure in tablecloth on left inpainted, overall very good condition
