This American Flag wears 36 stars on printed gauze or muslin fabric at 12 in. X 18 in. The 36 star flag is one of the rarest of American flags because it only flew for twenty-eight months. It is sometimes referred to as the "reconstruction flag" which is not entirely accurate. Important to Nevada as the 36th state, the flag was not issued nationally until July 4, 1865; however, it was flown over Union troops before the Surrender at the Appomattox Court House in April of 1865. Nevada having been admitted to the Union on October 31, 1864. This flag was likely flown at a parade without mounting grommets. It was secured by three nails or staples to a dowel or stick evidenced by oxide on the fabric at three locations. This flag shows wear at the outer edges from limited use. The 36 star flag represents the unification of the nation after the Civil War. Nevada, take it home. Please see photo for details.
