Third Texas Cavalry Confederate Flag "The Lone Star Defenders". On June 13, 1861, a new regiment of 1097 enthusiastic Texan secessionists was sworn into Confederate service at Dallas, Texas. The regiment was created from ten companies raised in twelve Northeast Texas counties and the majority of the men were slaveholders who supported the Confederate cause, not too surprising as many were from the plantation districts. Col. Elkanah Greer of Marshall organized the regiment and became its first commander. The unit was the first regiment of Texas volunteers to serve outside the state; they were assigned to Indian Territory as part of McCulloch's Brigade and saw their first action at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri on August 19, 1861. Half its companies participated in the Battle of Chustenahlah in Indian Territory, the day after Christmas in 1861, against pro-Union Creek tribesmen which is the engagement shown on this great flag. The unit remained intact throughout the war, and saw service in both the Trans-Mississippi Department and in most of major campaigns of the Western Theater of War. The Third Texas Cavalry fought in battles as far apart as Oklahoma and Atlanta and eventually became part of Sul Ross' famous Texas Brigade. Lieutenant General Richard Taylor surrendered the unit on May 4, 1865 along with the rest of his command.

We hesitate to claim that this was a battle flag as we do not have the provenance to back that up. It was possibly used in battle, but more likely was a parade or reunion flag created shortly after the Civil War. The colors are bright and strong and the condition is very fine, strong and sturdy, with only a few scattered small tears and holes. The overall appearance is wonderful, perfect for display, with the red "3" inside the large white Lone Star on the blue canton and the "3rd Texas Cav." and "Chustenahlah" stenciled onto the applied white banners against the red field. The dimensions are 40" x 33". A great opportunity to own a superb Confederate flag associated with the popular Texas regiment known as the Lone Star Defenders.
