Thessaly. The Perrhaebi, c.
Thessaly. The Perrhaebi, c.<p>400-334 B.C. AE 21. Veiled head of Hera facing/Zeus standing left, holding thunderbolt and scepter. SNG Cop 196. Overall VF but with scattered craters filled with powdery green cancroid. While the firm that sold this coin to Dr. Seventko in 1991 described it as having "brown patina with red highlights," through either poor storage, or, more likely, late 20th century harmful techniques in cleaning (acids were probably used), this rare bronze now has what we call "the bronze disease." It is called a disease because the problem is known to spread quickly to other portions of the coin, or even "jump" to other bronzes in a cabinet. There are ways to halt this insidious metallurgical alteration and relieve the surfaces of the coin; it can yet be saved for future collectors. The procedure should be done by a conservator, and usually involves heating the coin as part of the treatment. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M. Seventko.
