This is a set of ten photos depicting early 20th century life in Thermopolis. Photographs measure 5 1/4”x3”, six white single mattes and four gray single mattes with decorative borders 7”x5”, high contrast, and the focus is sharp. Thermopolis is located north of Shoshoni on Hwy. 20. The town is tucked against the foothills of the Owl Creek Mountains and is nestled beside the Big Horn River. Two shots are of Thermopolis, one photo is of the mineral hot springs and bath house, four shots depict camping and hunting, one photo shows a river crossing by barge, one log cabin, and a US Government campsite. The camping photos show a horse and wagon, horse and buggy, and the success of an Elk hunt. Thermopolis was founded in 1897, after the land was acquired from the Shoshone and Arapahoe tribes. These photos are depictions of life in Thermopolis as it was in its infancy. According to the town, Thermopolis is the largest mineral hot springs in the world.
