There are so many slaves.... Letter on
There are so many slaves.... Letter on slavery, from a Northern woman schoolteacher at Greensborough, Georgia, 1835, to her sister in Clinton, N.Y., 3 -1/2 pp. With integral address-leaf, postal marking "25." Planning to return to N.Y., she writes that she has had enough of teaching in the South. "...There are so many slaves...Some negroes who have just been b(r)ought to (Mr. Matthew's) plantation from Tennessee have brought the smallpox with them. Two men left sick on the road & one has been taken sick with it since arrived. The man who brought them...is sick...The negroes belonged to an orphan child for whom Mr. M. is guardian & carried off to a house by themselves...." She mentions it will be impossible to keep the local negroes away. "They will go out of curiosity...They are strange creatures, poor things, Mr. Hand remarked...There'll have to be abundance of whipping now to keep the negroes at home. If I had anything else to say, I would not talk so much about the negroes...though they are so linked with everything here." Written in a fine, literate hand. Foxing on address panel, else fine.
