TLS, one page, 8.25 x 11, Metropolitan letterhead, July 27, 1917. Roosevelt sends a letter of recommendation to Major Wells at Fort Wayne, Michigan. In part: “Van Wiebe is a Harvard man of the class ’09, now with the Goodrich Rubber Company in Detroit. I followed his career rather closely in Harvard, where he was one of the best football players on the Varsitty [sic] team. He is precisely the type of man who would do most credit to us as an officer. I very warmly commend him. We would be fortunate to have him in the Army. Hoping you will excuse me for trespassing on your time.” In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds, punch holes to left edge, some light creasing, and areas of mild irregular toning and staining.
