Vintage sepia matte-finish 9 x 6.5 photo of Roosevelt on his favorite horse, Bleistein, leaping over a brush hurdle, signed in black ink, as president, “Theodore Roosevelt, May 1902.” Photo is affixed to a larger mount, which is then matted to an overall size of 14.25 x 12. Four noticeable creases to photo, mostly to background, with one through small portions of horse’s tail and hind leg, small ding under date, and a couple hints of trivial soiling, otherwise very good condition. This photograph was taken on May 3, 1902, by the renowned Washington, D. C. photographer Barnett McFee Clinedinst at the Chevy Chase Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Roosevelt had left the White House on Bleistein and rode the six miles to Chevy Chase. From Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter by Theodore Roosevelt (Charles Scribner’s Sons: New York, 1906): “One day, May 3, 1902, I took him out to Chevy Chase and had him photographed while jumping various fences and brush hurdles.” Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
