Unusual partly-printed DS, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, April 8, 1899. An official request from the government of California for the signatures of the Governor, Secretary of State, and the Secretary to the Governor for the state of New York, as well as an impression of their state seal. Boldly signed in fountain pen by Theodore Roosevelt, as well as his Secretary of State and secretary. In very good condition, with an office ‘received’ stamp over opening portion of Roosevelt’s signature, scattered light toning and some mirroring of ink, and several folds and wrinkles.

Elected New York’s governor in 1898, TR invested his two-year administration with the same vigor and businesslike characteristics that became his trademarks in the White House. He would have sought re-election in 1900, since much of his work was only half done, but the GOP had other plans, tapping him as William McKinley’s running mate in the 1900 presidential election—a role he held only briefly until McKinley’s 1901 assassination. It is not known why the state of California would request Governor Roosevelt’s signature, making this intriguing document worthy of further research. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
