TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Navy Department letterhead, May 4, 1898. Letter to Hon. James Eckels of the Commercial National Bank in Chicago, in full: “I thank you heartily for your kindness. Didn’t Dewey do well? I will have all the documents I can get sent to you.” In fine condition, with filing holes to top edge. This was written just three days after Admiral George Dewey’s decisive victory in the Battle of Manila Bay, and two days prior to Roosevelt’s resignation as assistant secretary of the Navy to form the First US Volunteer Cavalry—better known as the ‘Rough Riders.’
