LS signed “T. Roosevelt,” one page, 8 x 5.5, August 31, 1898. Letter to William E. Davenport of Manhattan. In full: “I much appreciate the honor you have done me, and shall be grateful by it.” Impressively cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and three descriptive plaques to an overall size of 30 x 20. In fine condition, with intersecting folds passing through the signature and mild soiling. Roosevelt had become a national hero with his charge on San Juan Hill just two months earlier and sent this letter in response to a poem submitted to him by Davenport entitled ‘Faithful to His Charge,’ dedicated to Roosevelt’s spirit. A superb letter from the period of Roosevelt’s military fame.
