Magnificent matte-finish 5.75 x 9 Rockwood portrait of Roosevelt in his Rough Rider uniform, signed and inscribed in black ink, "To Capt. Jas. Madison Andrews ADC, from Theodore Roosevelt, Col. 1st USV Cavalry." Affixed to its original Rockwood photographer’s mount trimmed to 8 x 10. In fine condition, with some trivial surface marks and the signature perhaps a shade light. The portrait exhibits amazing detail—from the creases in Roosevelt’s gloves to his buttons and collar, down to his intricate belt buckle. Andrews had been a cavalry lieutenant in the early 1890s, serving in the Sioux campaign and Spanish-American War, and later became Roosevelt’s aide-de-camp. Historically significant and one of Roosevelt’s most famous photos.
