<B><I>Theodore Roosevelt as Rough Rider</B></I></B></I><I><BR></B></I><BR>James Earle Fraser (American, 1876-1953) <BR>Cast by Modern Art Foundry, circa 1919<BR>Bronze with warm brownish red patination<BR>Incised: <I>Fraser c. 1919 </B></I>with monogram <I>MA cast 1901 <BR></B></I>20 inches high<BR><BR> Depicting Theodore ("Teddy") in his typical garb of neckerchief and jacket with epaulettes. Roosevelt served as one of the 1,250 members of the First U. S. Volunteer Calvary Regiment, known as the "Rough Riders," during the Spanish-American War (1898.) In 1899, Teddy published "The Rough Riders," the first installment of which was published in <I>Scribner's</B></I> in January of that year.
