Roosevelt served as one of the 1,250 members of the First U. S. Volunteer Calvary Regiment, known as the "Rough Riders," during the Spanish-American War (1898.) In 1899, Teddy published "The Rough Riders," the first installment of which was published in <I>Scribner's</B></I> in January of that year.
