Theodore Roosevelt Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8.5" x 10", Africa, December 2, 1909. A terrific letter by the boxing aficionado discussing the Johnson-Ketchel fight and Jim Johnson. Written to his "Dear comrade Tony," written while on safari in Africa. In full: "Here is the flower for Miss Alberta! I wish I could have sent it, with many happy returns, on her birthday. It was good to hear from you. That must have been a rattling fight between Ketchel and Johnson; Johnson is unquestionably a first class fighter; I wonder if Jim Jeffries can get back into old form; if he can it will be a tremendous battle when they meet. I am very sorry to hear of Mr. Budanan's death; he was a high minded and efficient public servant." While he was the Heavyweight Champion, Jeffries refused to fight Johnson because he was black. When the two finally met in Reno, Nevada on the fourth of July, Jeffries was billed as "The Great White Hope". Johnson would score a fifteenth round knockout of Jeffries. Archivally cloth matted and framed to an overall size of 17.75" x 20.25". In fine condition, with a light shade of overall toning, trivial pencil notation in bottom corner and a bisecting mailing fold. Although TLsS of T.R. are quite available, ALsS are much less so, particularly with this interesting content. Himself an avid amateur boxer, T.R. was clearly a fan of the professional sport as well, it seems!
