Hungarian-born Austrian founder of Zionism. As a correspondent during the Alfred Dreyfus affair, he determined that the solution to anti-Semitism was the establishment of a Jewish state. TLS in German, signed “Herzl,” one page, 8.5 x 11, June 5, 1903. Letter to his followers, addressed as “like-minded thinkers.” In part (translated), “By this letter we draw your attention to page 33 of our organization’s statutes according to which the accounts of the Congress office must be closed by the 30th of June. We accordingly request you very urgently to arrange settlement with us in such a way that we are in receipt of your financial statements and monies due to us by June 30 of this year at latest.” In very good condition, with scattered small stains, intersecting folds, light mirroring of text due to premature folding as well as light haloing around text. Herzl presided over six Zionist Congresses between 1897 and 1903, setting up the Jewish Colonial Trust, the Jewish National Fund and the movement's newspaper Die Welt.
