ALS in German, signed “Th. Herzl,” one page, 5.5 x 8.75, Hamburger Hof, Hamburg, October 24, 1890. Letter to an unidentified friend reads, in full: “Dearest friend! Your letter has been forwarded to me here where I took refuge one day ahead of the annoying matter of the scheduled rehearsals. My plans are to return tomorrow morning. So far, Hasemann did not contact me and I purposely did not call on him either before receiving your message. Now I shall definitely approach him to bring the matter to a conclusion, if possible. I do think that he is the most suitable individual for that. I intend to work on the ‘couplets’ during my trip home. At the moment, there are too many other issues mulling around in my head. Do write to me to my Berlin address ’4 Jahreszeiten’ where I will be residing again tomorrow. Eight days from today I expect to be in Vienna. Cordial greetings from your devoted, Herzl.” In fine condition, with a small repair to top right corner tip and small mounting remnants on reverse lightly showing through.

Herzl, the father of modern Zionism, also had some success as a playwright and gained popularity. Several of his plays were staged across German-speaking countries, including Germany, Austria, and in Prague. Some performances were were held in the Burgtheater, the most prestigious theater in Vienna. Herzl’s most successful play, Wilddiebe, a play he co-wrote with Hugo Wittmann, was part of the Burgtheater’s repertoire for fourteen years. Based on the date of this letter, Herzl is likely referring to another collaboration with Wittman, Die Dame in Schwarz.
