Theo Tobiasse ROMEO ET JULIETTE Juliet ACT I Art Print
This lively and dynamic print by famous artist Theo Tobiasse is entitled "Romeo et Juliette Acte I/III." The artist shows us the moment before the real action of the play begins — the servant signaling the start of the feast where Romeo and Juliet will — finally (after the expository scene iv) — meet and begin their tragic journey towards theatrical immortality. We believe that Juliet, her mother and nurse are standing on the balcony waiting for the guests to arrive:

Born in Palestine in 1927 but raised in occupied Paris, Tobiasse spent the crucial years of his youth in hiding from the Nazis. After the war he worked as a commercial artist until 1961, when he turned to painting full time. He has enjoyed popular and critical recognition worldwide with one-man shows in most major markets including New York, Paris, Tel Aviv, Tokyo and Caracas. According to one art expert: "His paintings transcend history, blending images into one moment-warping time into the present tense; his past, his dreams, mythology, Judaic legends and, biblical stories all inter-twine to become understandable in today's terms." (Kenneth Nahan; Tobiasse;Chaim Potok; Rizzoli; N.Y.; 1986)
