Theo A. Kochs Porcelain Barber Chair c. 1890-1910
Featured in this lot is this porcelain and hydraulic barber chair from Theo A. Kochs, circa 1890-1910. The barber chair features a lovely design of naga hide and steel construction. It has a wonderfully decorated foot stool and features floral designs to the wall of the seat frame and the stool itself. The chair also features an early hydraulic lift handle that pumps, but it is low on fluid. The chair also includes a barber side seat—models including this piece are extremely rare. The barber side seat fastens into a pipe holder on the back of the chair. The Theo A. Kochs Company formed in Chicago in 1871, making these chairs some of the oldest in the U.S. Their unique designs set them apart from others. The earliest models were made from wood with leather upholstery. The condition of this barber chair is good, with the naga hide showing some cracks and wear consistent with age. The hydraulic lift action works, but it is close to empty on fluid. The chair is missing the headrest, but is otherwise in good overall condition. The measurements of this barber chair are 38" x 43" x 40 3/4" overall and measures 53 3/4" high with the headrest all the way up and 47 3/4" all the way down.
