The news is glorious.... Letter from Ha
The news is glorious.... Letter from Hamilton, Ill., Mar. 17, 1862, to "Dear Friend," signed "God bless you, BB," 12 pp. of commentary on the war. "...The achievements of our armies...the news is glorious. True, McClellan's victories on the Potomac...are yet to be telegraphed...but even he has learned by this time that the way to put down treason is not by 'masterly inactivity.' He is now moving, and altho he will have to fight the enemy at a far stronger point...I believe he will fight and conquer even yet. The western army and the generals...(are) covered with glory. A grateful country is shedding tears of gratitude...." Discusses American political heritage, degradation of slavery and its "barbarity," aristocracy and "the treason of the leadership." Erudite historical summations of American events in the 12 pages of this closely written missive by the learned letter-writer signing himself only with the initials "BB." A bit light, else about fine.
