The most unusual Blacksmith Token I have ever seen!!
This is the most unusual Blacksmith token I have ever seen. It is difficult to decipher what the original host coin was or in what order the token was overstuck, but there appears to be three distinct strikings on this one piece. The host coin appears to be a Blacksmith token, similar to Wood 4, BL-3. Only the reverse shows ; the obverse is obscured. Then, the token was flipped over, rotated 120 degrees and another Wood 4 was struck, Coinage die axis, 6.11 gms. 27.46 mm. The obverse and reverse seem to have been blessed with a relatively strong strike. It appears the token was then used to strike a P.E.I. Ships, Colonies & Commerce token. The reverse of this striking appears the stronger of the two sides of the token, as the obverse is almost totally obscured. The PS" of ships is visible, as is the "NIES" of Colonies, while all of "COMMERCE" is distinct. The reverse itself has quite prevalent border beads which are not uniform in size or shape. The most recognizable reverse type would be that of Lees 23 or 26, but the E's are not nicked, so it can't be Lees 23. Only part of the lower left of the ampersand is partly visible. I would like to attribute it as Lees 3, also a blacksmith, but it appears that that the ampersands on these are not struck up and the quality of the legend is un-blacksmith like. Being that the flan is too wide for a S.C. & C. token, the rim is wider than normal. The obverse of this third strike is, as stated, obsured, although an area at the centre shows depressions in shapes that might be the hull of the ship and the sail lines below the sails. It is unfortunate that the token is harshly cleaned. However, it is this cleaning that has helped identify some of the design elements. It also has several scratches at the top left of the S.C.& C. reverse. A very unusual token, deserving of more research.
