James Willard Schultz (1859 – 1947), or Apikuni, knew the Blackfeet Indians intimately. Arriving at Fort Benton in Blackfeet territory in 1877, he married his beautiful Blackfeet wife, Natahki, and spent decades as a trader, rancher and hunting guide in what is now western Montana. Schultz was given the name Apikuni by the Pikuni chief, Running Crane; Apikuni in Blackfeet means, "Spotted Robe." He spent his later life writing 47 books, many of them novels about his friends, the Blackfeet Indians. Schultz was also a noted author, explorer, Glacier National Park guide, fur trader and historian of the Blackfoot Indians. His memoir, ''My Life as an Indian", tells the story of his first year living with the Pikuni tribe of Blackfeet Indians East of Glacier.
