<p>
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1993. Hardcover with DJ, 384pp. 275 ills (196 plates & 79 duotones). Published to coincide with the landmark exhibition of the same name held at the Metropolitan in 1993-4, the 253 works in the exhibition were selected from the more than 5000 that comprise the legendary Gilman Paper Company collection. The first 3 chapters cover the period from the birth of photography in 1839 through its early maturation in the 1860s. Chapter 4 examines photography in America and vividly charts the Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Investigations of self and society are looked at in Chapter 5 while Chapter 6 brings the provocative new vision of the 20th century. The artists represented include the British and French masters (including Fenton, Lewis Carroll, Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadar, Baldus & Le Gary), while the American section includes Brady, O'Sullivan and Watkins among others.
