Sotheby’s. THE NELSON BUNKER HUNT COLLECTION: HIGHLY IMPORTANT GREEK AND ROMAN COINS. PART I. New York, June 19, 1990. 4to, unbound signatures taped together at the spine. (272) pages; 55-164 lots; all coins illustrated in monochrome at actual size, with color enlargements of both sides. Lots up to 141 are heavily annotated, recording the prices brought by similar examples and, perhaps most importantly, recording the prices paid by Hunt. Ersatz “binding” starting to come apart; very good or better. The first copy of Part I of the Hunt Greek and Roman coins. David Tripp was the cataloguer of the Roman coins in this sale, and relates the following story: “The coins were going on to their initial exhibition in Zurich; the unbound signatures arrived the day before I left. I attractively bound it, as you can see (the uses of masking tape are boundless). I used this copy for a week or two and started annotating it (including prices paid by Nelson Bunker Hunt).” The annotations are remarkably detailed, in some cases listing as many as ten different auction results deemed relevant. The prices paid by Hunt (generally not part of the public record) are also recorded, making this a most important copy of an enormously significant sale. A rare work from the Tripp Bindery.
