(Disney, 1934) This incredibly rare and beautiful original artwork was used for a page in Good Housekeeping Magazine that promoted the Walt Disney Silly Symphony cartoon, The Tortoise and the Hare. In 1934, Good Housekeeping Magazine and the Walt Disney Studios joined in a mutual promotional plan which involved the studio supplying a single page “Children’s” feature including characters from Disney cartoons. Good Housekeeping felt it would increase sales of the magazine and Disney liked the idea of a permanent advance publicity break for its latest cartoon shorts. From 1934 until 1944, Disney created and supplied artwork for a page in each issue of the magazine. The original art for those pages is regarded today as some of the best to come out of the studio during that period, and is highly prized among collectors. The piece offered here consists of (5) beautifully rendered hand-painted panels applied to board. This artwork for The Tortoise and the Hare appeared in the October 1934 issue of Good Housekeeping magazine, in advance of the short’s January 1935 release, and was the 7th such page to appear in the series. The short later won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short and became one of the more popular Silly Symphonies, spawning a 1936 sequel, Toby Tortoise Returns. The popularity and longevity of The Tortoise and the Hare makes artwork such as this page a true testament to the studio's early years. Accomplished in watercolor and gouache, the artwork is mostly likely by Disney artist Tom Wood, who was responsible for many of the early Good Housekeeping panels. The piece is beautifully custom framed with an overall size of 27.5"x33.5" and is in very fine condition.
