The Ten Commandments Baka (Vincent Price) Sandals
For the ultimate larger-then-life movie director, there is no greater glory than going out on top. And for Cecil B. DeMille, what could be a grander finale than directing what is considered the most successful movie of all time, "The Ten Commandments" (1956). Many a blockbuster has been made since, but none really have ever achieved the full glory of this biblical masterpiece. Props and costumes from this epic are one of the most sought after in the movie memorabilia collectable world. These are the actual hero screen worn sandals of Vincent Price who played Baka, the villainous whip-cracking slave master. They are beautifully realized in his oversize 10 (he was a big man, standing over six foot four inches), They are decorated with faux-gold trimmings and rope stitching with a felt footing, and multi-colored "lotus flower" buckles. These hero shoes were used as reference points in the new digital restoration of the road show version of the original film, painstakingly made by Paramount Pictures' Andrea Kalas, vice president of archives and Ronald F. Smith, vice president of restoration. Many props and costumes that still existed were given to the digital technicians to insure that the colors were as accurate to the original road-show VistaVision print as possible including Vincent's shoes (the colors on the buckles were especially of interest to other colorations in the feature). The soles of the shoes have a printed "10" on the front, "W.C.C." (for Western Costume Company), in the center and "PAR" (for Paramount Pictures) hot stamped on the arches.
