The Tagore Gold Medal, St Xavier’s College, Calcutta, 1922, an openwork gold medal, 28.56g, Tagore coat of arms consisting of a deity surmounted on arms with supporters and a sun burst in center, awarded to C. Chambers etched on obv., Presented by Maharajah Sir Prodoyat Kumar Tagore, K.T. (Knight Bachelor), St Xavier’s College, Calcutta etched on rev., with original dark blue ribbon, gold clip and suspender bars (Pudd. 948.110.1, but slight difference in design). In red fitted case of issue by Cooke & Kelvey, Diamond Merchants, Calcutta, Extremely Fine, Extremely Rare. Sir Prodyot Kumar Tagore, KCIE (1873-1942), was a land owner, philanthropist and an art collector. His father had been honoured with the title of Maharaja Bahadur in 1877 by Viceroy Lord Lytton. The title of Maharaja was made hereditary by Viceroy the Marquess of Lansdowne in 1891. Sold with a cutting from a publication, which shows that the award was made to Charles Chambers in 1922 for English Composition, scoring 80 marks out of a possible 100, and listing the names of 11 other students who received honourable mentions.
